Helen Keller Day Celebrations 2.00pm, arranged by Vision Impairment Services Strathmont. Centre, at Strathmont Centre Oakden.
Deafblind Association meeting. 7.30 pm at the Royal Deaf Society boardroom.
Speakers on the DIRC EnableNet, and a speaker from the Commonwealth Bank on banking for the disabled.
AGM, 3 SEPTEMBER AT THE ROYAL DEAF SOCIETY BOARDROOM
7.30 pm.
Report on the Sydney Conference.
We had three members of our executive committee resign during the early part of this year, and our meetings barely have a quorum present. Is there anyone who would be interested in joining our executive committee?
We owe our thanks to Llyn Duffie, Lis Burtnik and Delores Wells for their help and support in the past. Their experience and helpful advice will be very much missed. We appreciate that they are too busy to spare the time to help us with the committee work, and we are very sorry to receive their resignations. Ivo Elts, who has been a committee member since the Association first started, has also indicated that he wishes to cut back on his volunteer involvement, and has forewarned of his wish to retire.
The AGM is coming soon (September 3). I am appealing for a volunteer willing to become President of our Association.
I am not personally involved in Deafblind issues either in my employment or through family involvement; nor do I feel I have time to be effective in lobbying, publicity, social and fund-raising activities. My employment workload has increased of late (and I am also slowing down as I near retirement) and while I will continue to be involved with the Association, I hope it can be in another way rather than as President.
Is there anyone who would be willing to take on this role at our AGM in September?
Three of our Executive members are planning to attend. That is our Vice-President, Arnold Cielens; our Secretary, Emma Gordon; and Craig Gordon. They have appealed for financial support to cover conference enrolment, fares and accommodation, and while the Association is unable to support them directly from our limited resources, donations towards their expenses can be made on an income tax deductible basis via the Association. If you send a donation please indicate that it is to be used for this purpose and for which delegate. Donations to the Deafblind Association of $2 and over are tax deductible.
We applied for $5,000 for two Deafblind delegates and their carers to attend the Sydney Conference. These delegates will not be Executive Committee members. We should hear very soon whether we were successful in securing this grant. If you are interested in attending the conference please make contact soon so we can consider your application.
If the money is forthcoming there will not be another newsletter before we choose the Conference delegates we hope to be able to support. May I therefore ask that those who are interested in receiving financial support to go to the Sydney Conference let us know before the 15 June.

Dr. Wendy Seymour from the University of South Australia is conducting research 'on the abandonment of computer technology by people with disabilities'. She writes: 'As you know, there is copious evidence that equipment and technology designed to assist people with disabilities is often under-utilized or abandoned. While past investigations have focused on the function of the technology and the skills of the user, we are turning the focus on the human factors that shape a client's decisions to adopt or to abandon technologies. Specifically, we are trying to get to less visible factors - to the private dimensions of self-identity and body image - which may impede or facilitate technological engagement.
Talking with people who have abandoned technology is difficult to achieve since they have usually flown the system. For this reason, I am looking for people with disabilities who would be prepared to talk about their experiences of using computer technology - ie. what factors they feel facilitated their use, what may have impeded it , the advantages, disadvantages etc . The project has gone through the research ethics committees at UniSA and at Regency Park.'
If you are interested in helping Dr. Wendy Seymour with her research, are willing to be interviewed or have any queries you can contact the project manager, Sanjugta Vas Dev. Contact details follow.

As you would well know, the budget was handed down recently and has made some huge changes to people receiving disability pensions. The good news for people receiving the blind pension is that they will not be subject to the income testing and will continue to receive their full entitlement regardless of the hours that they work. Unfortunately, those on any other from of disability pension will be. For further information contact Centrelink.
There has been a lot of media coverage of the hearing screening for newborn's pilot project. The Deafblind Association of SA welcomes this new project and hope it will continue on a permanent basis. Who knows? Perhaps one day this may extend to screening for vision impairments. The earlier that either or both impairments are recognised in a baby, the sooner intervention can be implemented.
The Deafblind Association of SA love to receive email. Unfortunately, in the last newsletter the wrong email address was mistakenly printed. The correct email address is dba_sa@ihug.com.au We look forward to your email!
When the store manager returned from lunch, he noticed his clerk's hand was bandaged, but before he could ask about the bandage, the clerk said he had some very good news for him. "Guess what, sir?" the clerk said. "I finally sold that terrible, ugly suit we've had so long!"
"Do you mean that repulsive pink-and-blue double-breasted thing?" the manager asked.
"That's the one!"
That's great!" the manager cried, "I thought we'd never get rid of that monstrosity! That had to be the ugliest suit we've ever had! But tell me. Why is your hand bandaged?"
"Oh," the clerk replied, "after I sold the guy that suit, his guide dog bit me."
